I was the cook in the village pub for a while 35ish years ago and while I was there, the door was conserved. When it was examined, pieces of skin were found under the heads of some of the iron nails in the door. Apparently for many years the locals and the vikings fought and did unspeakable things to each other. Land changed hands many times. A particularly nasty punishment for being caught by the “opposite team” was to be skinned alive. The skin then being nailed up in some prominent place as a warning. When they tested the skin from the door nails it turned out to be cow. When I was there this was the exterior door of the church, I gather that since conservation a further exterior door has been added to protect this one.<br />Hope you find this interesting.Simon Beernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6234783319349274920.post-82841891167429714962017-10-15T09:18:27.394-04:002017-10-15T09:18:27.394-04:00Back in the 60s, my Grandfather always said, "...Back in the 60s, my Grandfather always said, "If her skirt gets any shorter, she will have two more cheeks to powder and another place to shave."
