A PHOTO ESSAY ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE

I was born in the deep South and would probably be as racist as most white people there, but I had the good fortune to move to Oklahoma at a young age. In the South young boys would brag if they had any "Indian blood", but when I got to Oklahoma I discovered that they didn't give a shit about black people one way or the other, but they hated indians. It dawned on me that one of these world views had it all screwed up, then, of course, I realized that they both were wrong. The rest of my racial enlightenment was awakened by my black roommate in the Air Force, Calvin Coolidge Jones; the only black man I had ever met who was smarter than I was.

This is my very first outdoor mural. I called it "Forward Together" and it depicted old people, young people, men and women, and black and whites all walking shoulder to shoulder into the future.

I set my scaffolding up on the far right of the mural and painted ten or so feet before I had to move it down the wall. That first guy with the blue shirt was very proud that I had selected him....until I placed the black woman next to him, then he threatened to sue me. So I went back on site late one night and added about a foot on each side of his belly making him look considerably fatter than he actually was...it was the least I could do.

Turn his skin black and make him live in America.
