About Me

I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

TAKING A DAY OFF, FOLKS

Shit gets weird sometimes, folks.
The widow...newly widowed....wife of my dead....newly dead....friend asked my wife this question over the phone:
"Ask that son of a bitch husband of yours if he will be a pallbearer."
That left my wife speechless, since she knows I have long ago been to my last funeral.
Then the woman laughed out loud, since in our long conversations at the bar at the American Legion, she KNEW I was not going to another funeral.
I like to think, in my skewed logic kind of way, that I gave her her first laugh of the day.

Further, Tuesdays are normally very, very slow days at the Legion. But today, with news of Karl's death, the place was full....packed, with people toasting our departed friend.
Later in the evening, I whispered to the bartender, "It seems that death is good for business."
I may have been the only man in the room who could have gotten away with that without reprimand.

My wife had the presence of mind to come get me for a courtesy "I know you're not drunk but why take the chance"  ride home.

I've found that drink dulls the knives...as it were.

A week or so ago, I had the opportunity to tell my friend how much his friendship meant to me. Nothing sappy, just..."Thanks for your friendship" or some such shit. That meant a lot to him and me. You might want to try it while your friends are still healthy....just sayin'.

I am not one to say I'm sorry for something I didn't do, so I will say that I hope you are doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.

I lost a friend this last year to a train, of all things. I also had the opportunity to express to him how much his friendship meant to me shortly before his demise. Obviously I have no way of knowing if it meant anything to him (since he got hit by a train and is now no longer among those that can care about such things!) but it did mean a great deal to me to let him know how I felt.

Thank you for your continued efforts to enlighten and entertain. Your wife is a very lucky woman, as you are a very lucky man to have encountered her.
