One Of My Very Own
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
NEWSY BITS
FROM MY DAUGHTER
As you know, much of my research is conducted at Arecibo Observatory, which suffered significant damage during Hurricane Maria. One of the telescope operators there, Angel Vasquez, is a ham radio user and has been spending his precious generator fuel to communicate with colleagues around the country who tune in to his broadcasts. What we have learned is that the staff themselves are in terrible circumstances, much like the rest of the island. No one has electricity, and several close friends have lost their homes entirely. Although the observatory has well water, the staff and their families are drinking creek water and rain runoff at home, and food and fuel are both running short. It's very, very hot, and the mosquitos are getting worse from the flooding, which means more people will get sick with dengue and maybe even Zika.
An Arecibo user from USRA (one of the institutional managers of the facility), has set up a GoFundMe campaign to collect donations for relief supplies which will be disbursed without overhead directly to those in need. The funds will be used to purchase generators, mosquito nets, solar powered fans, water filtration systems, chainsaws, satellite phone kits, batteries, etc. We recently learned that a FedEx package (containing parts to repair Angel's generator, which broke earlier this week), arrived safely in San Juan and was retrieved by the Observatory director and delivered to the observatory. So, there is a conduit to get supplies to the island now, and USRA will arrange the shipments and coordinate with Angel via ham radio about what is needed.
If you wish to contribute to the relief of people whom I know personally, friends who have supported my research and thus my career, people in dire need of help, please consider giving a donation of your own. The link is here:
I would appreciate if you could also please forward this link to others who might be interested in helping (the site has a link where you can share via FaceBook). From reading the news, and knowing how far Arecibo Observatory is from San Juan, no one expects material support from any other source any time soon.

"Palmyra (Arabic: تَدْمُر Tadmur) is an ancient Semitic city in present-day Homs Governorate, Syria. Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic period, and the city was first documented in the early second millennium BC. Palmyra changed hands on a number of occasions between different empires before becoming a subject of the Roman Empire in the first century AD." -Wikipedia

CONFLICT AND WAR
Taken from the March 2, 1942 issue of Life, these diagrams and maps detailed how the Axis powers could invade North America following Pearl Harbor. The Axis Plan was imagined in 6 Plans (Plan 1 is above).
Plan 2 of the Axis plan to invade America has the Japanese invading the West Coast of America via Pearl Harbor and then California.
Plan 3 of of the Axis plan to invade America has the Japanese invading North America through the Panama Canal, then proceeding up through Mexico to the West Coast of the United States.
Plan 4 has the combined naval strength of the Axis powers taking over the Atlantic, leading to an eventual invasion of the United States through the Mississippi River.
Plan 5 has the Axis powers invading the United States through Norfolk, Virginia.
Plan 6 involves the Nazi’s invading the United States through Canada via the St. Lawrence and Hudson valley’s.
NOTE: Did the Axis realize just about everyone in America owns at least one gun?

Brazil has nearly 60,000 murders per year - Here's a map to put that number in perspective.
You’re probably aware that Brazil is a dangerous place with a high murder rate. But what may come as a surprise is just how big the disparity is between Brazil and other large countries. Indeed, Brazil saw nearly 60,000 murders in 2015, as much as the United States, China, all of Europe, Northern Africa, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand combined.
Or so I'm told.

I read a book about that very thing. It was posited that our brain takes in far more information than we are conscious of, and sometimes subconsciously we deduct that there is danger afoot. It was suggested that you ignore that uneasy feelings at your own peril.
