About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

GET LEARNT

After getting real jobs with real responsibilities, members of my mural crew have come back to me to ask how I got them to work so hard.

My rule was that when I took a dozen or so young people on the road they could each leave their wallets at home. I would pay for their room, meals, beer, and even cigarettes. We played a lot of poker. They were encouraged to bring musical instruments.

My biggest challenge was estimating how long a mural would take to complete. I got very, very good at that and based my fee on that estimate. So, I would tell my crew that they would all get $100 a day and the mural should take 5 days. But if they finished in 4 days they would still get $500. Finish in 3 days and still get $500. That is HIGHLY motivating. Of course, an early finish saved me a lot of money on room and board for the crew.

US political cartoon showing big business as bosses of the Senate, 1889

A comment:

"This was because, before the 17th Amendment, the Senate wasn't elected. It was appointed by State Legislatures. There was widespread corruption in the appointment, There was a story in the 19th of a land baron standing outside the state house handing out thousand dollar bills to anyone who would vote for his appointment. True or not the story was popularly circulated showing what people thought. The 17th Amendment and the right to vote for them were believed to fix this."

---

But this disaster:

The 2010 Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United vs FEC case effectively blocked the ability to enact limits on campaign spending. The Citizens United decision opened the floodgates to the billions of dollars that have since poured into the election system, enabling those with access to concentrated wealth to have vastly more influence over our political system than the average American.

^^A2^^

We were told that an armed citizenry would make us safer.

That was a lie. Those 3500 people were not burglars, rapists, or home invaders. They were mostly innocent people.

^^A3^^

Not necessarily. With great parents, my grandson is a voracious reader.

He took his first standardized test for second graders. When he came home he told his mother he got all the questions correct because they were so easy. He also said that the hardest question was this:

What number comes next?

1,1,2,4,_

And he figured it out.

^^A4^^

The following was found on a site of facts. I have not confirmed all of them.

I once had a job in a factory making plastic Draculas. There were only two of us on the production line, so I had to make every second count.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST

As my grandfather would say,

"Just something else to break down."

^^B1^^

In South Carolina, they make the famous Pawley's Island Hammock. I've owned several of these rope wonders.

^^B2^^

It was stated that it is cake. Why it's that size and shape was not explained.

^^B3^^

I bet they have places like that on the ISS where they store their illegal drugs.

^^B4^^

I like everything about that.

^^B5^^

Guess where this extraordinary location is.

Note the guy's legs on the right for scale.

.
.
.
.
.

It's on top of this natural wonder.

You can even see the top of the structures that it's made of.

^^B6^^

What do you think this is?

Mussel Harvester

*I thought they were removing barriers to thwart beach landings in war.

^^B7^^

That doesn't make sense. Why would it topple with only a few inches of push?

^^B8^^

My smoking cessation has saved us a ton of money. I was spending a truck payment each month to make myself less healthy.

^^B9^^

What is this?

It was stated that it was a penny left in a dryer for years.

^^B10^^

Living in a city where every street is named after a person is a nightmare. You literally have to memorize the whole map to find your way around.

^^B11^^

The former Florida home of Khalil bin Laden, brother of Osama bin Laden. He lived here from 1980 to 2001 when he fled the US following the September 11th attacks.

Speaking of...

The night he announced the demise of the supervillain Bin Laden I told my wife that Obama had just insured his reelection.

^^B12^^

That's true.

^^B13^^

Ball Bearing

The first modern recorded patent on ball bearings was awarded to British inventor and iron master Philip Vaughan. He patented the first design for ball bearings in 1794, which were designed to support a carriage axle.

^^B14^^

Can you imagine tripping out on acid and seeing that?

^^B15^^

I used to end all my emails with:

YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!

Having to clean a shower is absurd. "Look at me, I'm a tiled oblong enclosure that is flooded daily with soap and water -  you know, the two things used to clean. Better scrub me down with different soap or I will develop a weird orange fungus infestation."

Absolutely clown shit. Unacceptable.

AND AWRY WE GO

I've never understood why anyone would want to share such an intimate moment with a photographer.

^^C1^^

We called that sized bottles "Magnums" and I've bought a thousand of them.

^^C2^^

In the Hindu religion, the cow has acquired a sacred status. It used to be sacrificed like other animals and offered to the gods and its meat was eaten. The cow was gradually incorporated into a religious ritual and itself became sacred and an object of veneration from the 4th century BCE.

*Well, I think it's time they revisit that decision.

Legend has it that if you blink 182 times into the bathroom mirror at Applebee's with the lights off, someone will call you an Uber to take you home and you won't even have to pay for it.

I actually feel bad for kids who grow up having access to unlimited knowledge. It used to be so easy to lie. When I was a kid someone told me they went to the same summer camp as Arnold Schwarzenegger and honestly, I didn't have enough information to dispute that.

RATHER ODD HUMAN BEHAVIOR

^^D1^^

^^D2^^

I seem to remember that Jesus got his nails done by some Roman guys. Hope that helps.

^^D3^^

What game are they playing?

^^D4^^

Do you think he measures out the distance and practices on the ground? Seriously. I read that it is important that they "do the math" but what exactly does that mean?

^^D5^^

This kid slashed his parent's car tire to avoid going to school.

I did shit like that to get out of going to church.

And there's not a goddamn thing you can do about it.

At least show up exhausted.

That may not load. Here's a backup.

*I had a lot of fun putting that together.

I'm not sure it's possible to believe in evolution and the Bible at the same time. That ought to tell you something very important.

B13.... I have lived in AZ for about 52 years and right now 30 minutes from Apache Junction and have never heard of this. I had to Google it and apparently it's true. Nice, but not worth the drive.
