About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

READ ME, SEYMOUR

Dearest Gentle Reader, this is the way to express your opinion in the comments:

A4 answer: The same tax regulations apply up and down to all income levels(1). The average person just reacts on a gut level without the benefit of the facts(2). For example Some reporter from MSM exclaimed in outrage that Trump deducted a foreign tax he paid. It’s in the regs. and only makes sense. Say you own FXI (Chinese ETF) and pay foreign tax on the dividends at 5% and your US tax rate is 24%. You are not taxed twice on that same income. Hence, you pay 5% foreign tax and 24 - 5 = 19% in US taxes. Doesn’t matter if you own 10 shares or 1,000,000. Curiously enough, the government thinks it makes sense for a company to pay tax on their earnings(3) and the shareholder (business owner) to pay tax on any dividends paid out from the same earnings. Essentially the same income is taxed twice(4)

Another point is that companies don’t pay taxes, individuals pay them in the way of higher prices(5).

Companies are merely pass-throughs. High corporate tax rates just make the US companies less competitive internationally, making them less able to expand, hire and pay higher wages(6). The average voter knows very little about the facts and actual issues in this and many other matters. This is why Biden gets away with one lie after another(7).

--------

I would like to thank that Anon for demonstrating effective communication. I do, however, have a few questions:

1. Does the average, say, school teacher get to deduct the car they drive to work, or the lunch at McDonald's, or his clothing, etc, like executives, do?
2. Don't you think that the average person who is getting worse and worse off has a beef with the tax system that they see as unfair?
3. Didn't the Supreme Court rule that a corporation was a person? If so, shouldn't it be taxed as a person? My profit from a mural is taxed and then if I give my net to a friend, he is taxed - so why not shareholders?
4. Isn't that like saying that I pay taxes then buy a pair of shoes and the shoe shop owner then has to pay taxes on it? Isn't that the way it is designed to work?
5. But isn't it true that if the people paid fewer taxes they would have more money to buy the company's products?
6. With stagnant wages and record corporate profits are you sure corporations are interested in paying higher wages?

7. So, here we are in a genuine discussion of economic misunderstandings and you jump directly into politics with nary a warning. Shame on you, sir.

But are you honestly trying to suggest that Biden lies more than the last guy who held the office? Really?

------

Final question: Is it a good thing or a bad thing that a mere handful of people control half the wealth in this country?

^^A1^^

I smiled when I read that then looked over at my dance partner...

*That's a sweatshirt she bought in high school.

^^A2^^

One of the funniest things I was ever asked to do in school was to make an insect collection and label the specimens with their scientific names. I used an amazing book that asked questions about the bug I found and then it sent me to page after page until it narrowed it down to one possibility. I loved it.

For instance, it would ask if it had six or eight legs. Six legs were sent to one page and eight were sent to another. Then it would ask if it had two body sections or three, etc, etc.

^^A3^^

That's the way I feel about people who try to be funny at a bar.

^^A4^^

Florida Man would just try to mate with them.

^^A5^^

I know I've said it before but the writing was the hardest work I've ever done but it was also the most rewarding. I think every person should at least try it at least once. I suggest you start with a short story. Thinking of something rather unique from your past is a pretty good starting point.

^^A6^^

The same, actually. If you can read Revelations without laughing out loud then you weren't paying attention.

^^A7^^

I actually experienced that with a woman whose husband was in Cancun with his secretary.

^^A8^^

Indeed!

^^A12^^

I will admit that I was a more difficult child than most.

Why we need Sex Education in America...

Hey, stupid, the point is to glue yourself that isn't easily removed.

^^B3^^

Remember, they can't both be right, but they can both be wrong.

^^B4^^

Angering anyone driving on the same road as you is an extremely stupid thing to do.

^^B5^^

Cheating a cheater is not cheating.

^^B8^^

I was once told that I was allowed to trim any limb that hung over the property line. But that just looks tacky.

^^B9^^

Science deniers.

^^B10^^

You know you watch a lot of movies when that is instantly recognizable.

^^B11^^

Why is it that you haul it in but you can't haul it out?

^^B12^^

^^B13^^

I think the person on the right knew exactly what the bottle would do.

Years ago I was going through a breakup and my boss at the time asked me what was up so I confided in her that I was having a rough time and she said: "maybe you'd feel better if you worked more".

WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT

^^C1^^

I wish I did anything as well as he does his thing.

^^C2^^

Photographing people doing something is usually far, far better than posed shots.

And that applies to paintings as well.

Isle Of Lewis, Scotland

And I bet the people who live there are inured to its specialness.

^^C5^^

I don't think I've ever seen a dog that didn't know how to swim. Do you suppose it's blind or something?

^^C6^^

Harvesting marshmallows

I cut a lot of Styrofoam when making aluminum sculptures and I always used a carving knife like this.

^^C7^^

Lightning hits firework

Do you think that is true?

^^C8^^

^^C9^^

Nude models are in a class to themselves. I was once asked to pose naked (TRUE!) but I declined because all the artists were male.

 I liked that very much.

Puzzle. Time: I know the face part of that image is supposed to be Steve Buscemi, but I have absolutely no idea how to meld that with a stove and oven.

I always thought he should have lended his likeness to put on the side of wood chippers. Fargo.

Dear Ralph, I can hardly understand The First 48 if it is from Mobile or New Orleans. Here in England there is definitely prejudice against Northern accents. Is it the same in the US, against the South?

Dear Mike, I'm from the South and I've never experienced any prejudice because of it. But, of course, I have a college education. I imagine if you talk like a redneck then you would be considered less intelligent by just about anybody.

On the attitude to the rich in Christianity:

"it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God"
