About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

FRIDAY #3264

One Of My Very Own

I've discovered that people are much more likely to tell me where and when they found one of my packets if there was a dollar inside.

A LITTLE HISTORY

A child sits on "Santas Reindeer" for a quick picture at a store in NYC in 1922. Santa Claus is a very old marketing gimmick by stores to get consumers to spend during the holidays. Its modern version was conceived in a 1823 poem, and the classic jolly old man in a red suit has been portrayed for over 150 years. It has been a tremendous global success for businesses and shows no sign of slowing down. Santas are at every mall during the holidays, but probably not that creepy though....any more.

Know who this guy is?
Bob Ross in military without an afro in 1960.

A man looks at murdered civilians during the Battle of Manila in the Philippines in 1945. The 1 month battle to retake the city from Japanese occupation proved costly for the populace, as the Japanese began routinely rounding up males of military age and shooting them. They also put people in concentrated areas as a form of a human shield to avoid artillery, as well as showing no regard for civilians during battles. General Douglas MacArthur did not allow these situations to deter him when he orchestrated his assaults, showing himself no sympathy towards civilian casualties. As a result, up to 240,000 civilians died in this battle. The city at times was full of the bodies of the civilian dead before it was finally liberated and those people could be buried.

A family from Eastern Europe (possibly Romania or Hungary) pose for a picture in the 1930s. This family was part of a group of Gypsies, which were all over the areas at the time. The people had their own culture and were nomads in a way, often trading with groups during their travels. They were sometimes despised, and like the Jews, the Nazis rounded Gypsies up and exterminated them. They were just another group of people the Nazis found inferior and in need of being systematically erased. Around 500,000 Gypsies were killed by the Nazis during WWII.

French police and fire fighters examine the damage after a bomb was detonated in Paris, France in 1980. The target was a Synagogue, the first attack in France against Jews since WWII. This attack killed 4 people and wounded dozens more. In the early 1980s, France experienced a heavy wave of Terrorist attacks, especially against Jews, from extremists fighting for Palestine and other radical Arab groups. Carlos the Jackal is the most well known captured terrorist from this time period, as he is serving a life sentence for orchestrated at least 5 bombings that killed 16 people.

Amphawa Floating Market near Bangkok, Thailand in 1970. The famous market is centuries old, and operates exactly the same as it has since its beginning. Small boats move up and down the market, helping traders move goods. Today it is a popular tourist destination for unique items and terrific food. Most of the buildings designs in this picture are not far off from their original looks hundreds of years ago, outside of normal modern amenities and necessary upgrades.

Heroes - ER docs who treated victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting
Front (L-R): Kevin Menes, MD, James Walker, DO
Rear (L-R): Patrick Flores, DO, Michael Tang, DO
This is just the ER doctors. There were surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, techs, and many others on duty initially, and many more arrived soon after. All hands on deck.
I would add that the picture above represents exactly what America is about.

THINGS GOING WRONG

This happens much more often than I would have thought...

===
Singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab was on stage when a fan asked her to sing one of her hit songs, “Have You Ever Drunk from the Nile?” She instead of singing it, she told the audience that drinking from the Nile can cause schistosomiasis, a parasitic worms infection. Egypt has been trying to eradicate the worms for decades. “Drink Evian, it’s better,” she said. Now she is going to trial for for incitement and “harming the public interest.”

Abdel-Wahab has been banned from performing in the country, due to her “unjustified mockery of our dear Egypt.”

Ran across these two awful logos.

And NATO.
When I was in middle school, kids drew millions of those stylized stars. It was like my students drawing this over and over.
I find them settling on that lame design for two very powerful organizations distressful.

I don't think we should be telling kids that everyone is beautiful, because they simply are not. How about we teach them that you don't need to be beautiful in the first place.

Kobe beef steers are fattened longer than e.g. American cows (sometimes twice as long) and are restricted from roaming/exercise so they don't get too tough. Just another lovely thing we do to animals in the name of tasty food, eh?

Also, that particular restaurant is a Ginza teppanyaki (iron griddle joint in the priciest district of Tokyo) so you can be sure his knife is quite sharp.
