About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

I really like language like that.

I'm the father who would have been worried about my daughters had they not tried marijuana in high school.

Good news: My wife cleaned the house.
Bad news: She found the harmonica I hid from her in 1996.

AIN'T NATURE GRAND

He never even said thank you.
^^B1^^

I think she was worried about the kid eating something bad.
^^B2^^

That's hilarious...to me anyway.
^^B3^^

That is one evil-looking bug.
Anybody know what it is?
^^B4^^

Both terrifying and beautiful at the same time.
Kind of like my first wife.

I usually stumble upon my wife's safe words by accident, like when I say ‘I paid full price for everything at Whole Foods’.

ODD HUMAN BEHAVIOR

I like everything about that.

Oldest living silent film actor in a 100-year-old movie.

The actor seen here being rescued by Teddy the Wonder Dog in Down on the Farm (1920) is still alive at the age of 102, making him the oldest living actor from the American silent film era.
The baby is played by Don Marion Davis, who acted under the stage name John Henry Jr. in more than 20 films between 1919 and 1925. Born in 1917, he's the oldest of five known child actors still alive from the American silent film era, and the last living person known to have appeared in a movie made before 1920.

A cafe in Japan is hiring paralyzed people to control robot servers in order to still make an income.

Do you believe that was done with one pen?
Me neither.

The picture was taken at the side entrance to the Governor’s mansion on Capitol Street in Jackson on June 17, 1965.

The boy is Anthony Quin, aged 5. His mother, Mrs. Aylene Quin of McComb, Mississippi, and her children were trying to see Governor Paul Johnson. They wanted to protest against the election of five Congressmen from districts where blacks were not allowed to vote. Refused admittance, they sat on the steps.
The cop and the kid met years later...

 ^^C11^^

I think the tilt of the camera made that look much steeper than it was. Still impressive.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST

Emergency Exit Device? What? A parachute?
^^D1^^

The 11-hour-pour with 259 mixer truckers utilized for 13,502-yard mat foundation laid on Oct 4, 2003, for the second condo structure, a mirror image of the first of Grande Towers, San Diego.

This meant the pour required 1 truck every 2 mins 33 secs!
^^D2^^

I would not slow down to film that. I would speed forward to warn the driver.

^^D4^^

IP68 insulating and sealing gel
The entire electronics section of the Sidewinder Missile is filled with that stuff. It's used to keep the extreme vibrations from shaking anything loose.
^^D5^^

I wonder why it needs to shrink back to "normal" size before continuing.
^^D6^^

I drive a vehicle about that size. I have a permanent parking place in the busiest shopping neighborhood in my area because they never bothered to paint the curb yellow behind a delineated parking spot because it was too small for normal cars.

The person who wrote A4 does not understand opportunity costs, which is why we need economists to spell out the best approach to combating climate change.

Puzzle time: I cheated. I had to google this because I could see no definitively correct answer. Turns out, there is no answer. This was supposedly a question asked in China of the school children.

The best answer I found was this: In China, you have to be at least 18 years old to obtain a boat licence. You have to hold that licence for a minimum of 5 years before you can transport cargo, and there are tiers based on weight (tonnage).
Although we do not know the total weight of the ship plus cargo, we can at least assume the captain holds the minimum cargo license. Therefore the youngest the captain can be is 23 if he received his licence early in his 18th year.

A5: Back when I was a kid (70's and 80's) they had filters on the cable going to each house. These filters would block a channel and it wasn't uncommon to see three of them screwed in to each other end to end. It wasn't until later that they started using the same looking filters to enable a channel rather than block it.

We would just climb the pole and remove the filters. And there you have it. No more scrambled TV.
