About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

PART ONE

^^A1^^

As a teenager, I answered a small ad in the back of a magazine that for a quarter offered to tell me how to stuff envelopes and get paid 25 cents for each one. I sent them my quarter and got a note back in the self-addressed stamped envelope I had included. It read: PUT YOUR OWN AD IN A MAGAZINE. True story.

^^A2^^

^^A3^^

????

^^A4^^

Well, that sucks.

^^A5^^

I have a cap that says:

MAKE AMERICA SANE AGAIN

^^A6^^

In ancient combat, those things would be very effective.

^^A7^^

^^A8^^

War is miserable.

^^B7^^

That came to me without explanation. So what's that thing scurrying across the bottom?

^^B8^^

^^B9^^

^^B10^^

*Please keep in mind that not every OOMVO is intended to be funny.

B8 - I think that it's a seagull, I've often seen them moving like that.

B8 That is some kind of sea bird (gull) scurrying by (with its head down a bit)

the oil drum (barrel) was placed on the 3 cinder blocks. Bung is open on top. Heat (likely from a torch) was applied from underneath. Air inside expands and escapes via the bunghole. Torch removed.
The bung was screwed shut. Drum moved to cart. Ice applied to top.
As the heated air in the drum cools, it contracts. Ice makes this faster.
As air contracts, a vacuum is created, which eventually collapses the drum.

Mythbusters did this with a railroad tank car regarding the tall tale that this often happens when tank cars are cleaned with superheated steam and then closed up. They had to work at it to make it happen.

its basic science, called PV=nRT

Although Fardy is correct, he offered no explanation to those not familiar with the physics equality equation.

This experiment, or demonstration, typically begins with a sealed barrel of very warm air. Ice is typically placed both below and on top of the drum. This quickly cools the air inside the drum, resulting in a pressure differential which exceeds the structural integrity of the drum.

When the internal pressure becomes low enough , atmospheric pressure crushes the drum instantaneously .
