They used to bale hay in rectangles and they had to get them in the barn before they got rained on or they would rot. Then someone invented rolling the hay and discovered that only the outside layer would rot even if left outside...or so I'm told. Now many farmers wrap the rolled hay with plastic to cut rot to near zero.
