Given that there are at least hundreds of millions of solar systems with planets capable of supporting life in the galaxy, there must be at least hundreds of thousands which have *two* of them orbiting the same star and supporting life at the same time.  Of those, there must be at least hundreds upon which intelligent life develops simultaneously and independently.   It would be so easy for them to meet that surely this has happened somewhere.  Would it be like Europeans discovering America, with their viruses wiping out most of the susceptible natives?  Would social discrimination on one planet be instantly moot with the identification of a new "lower class" species?   Would there be war and genocide?  I think so.

Maybe...or they may have taken no heed of germs, etc their first dozen contacts and then they took precautions. I'm thinking of the Stone Age tribe they found in Brazil and they...we...humans are being very, very careful not to fuck it up.

However, if the other civilization was in dire need of a resource, say water, then all bets are off.

BTW...I heard a scientist lay out the numbers and simply declared that the chance for intelligent life elsewhere is 100%. I agree.
