About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

FRIDAY #1945

******

Ran across a blog that made me think.

The goal of this blog is to help raise awareness of what I call The Risk Perception Gap  the danger that arises when we worry about some things more than the evidence suggests we need to, or less about some things than the evidence warns we should. These misperceptions are the natural product of a system of risk perception that, all in all, does a decent job keeping us alive, but because of some ancient instincts and mental processes, sometimes gets risk wrong…in dangerous ways...such as:
The United Nations today published a report on the cancer deaths so far, and the likelihood of cancer deaths in the future, due to the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster. You know, the one that freaked out the world about nuclear energy?
No radiation-related deaths or acute diseases have been observed among the workers and general public exposed to radiation from the accident. The doses to the general public, both those incurred during the first year and estimated for their lifetimes, are generally low or very low. No discernible increased incidence of radiation-related health effects are expected among exposed members of the public or their descendants.

Women who mostly or always eat organic foods have the same overall chance of developing cancer as women who never eat it, according to a new study from the UK's University of Oxford and published in the British Journal of Cancer that followed over 600,000 middle-aged women for nearly a decade.

"Ebola has killed hundreds in rural Central Africa over the past four decades, but it is unusual for it to reach urban centers." (It's out of the jungle! COULD YOU BE NEXT?) Wait. Hundreds of deaths, over 40 years? Compared to, say, the MILLIONS from malaria, and diarrhea from lack of clean drinking water, and HIVAIDS, in the very same region?

Give the site a shot, if you want...

Mexicans...go figure...
All it needs is Yakkety Sax or Benny Hill theme song.

These are footprints left behind when a tarantula-size arachnid crawled over the sand of what’s now northern Arizona, 260 million years ago.

Speaking of...

(this is not a film clip)
How could you save all that money. Change all government printings to Garamond. That kid printed off every letter of every font enlarged to full page size and weighed them. Garamond took less ink, therefore, less money.

Garden grown in hung gutters...

How fucking true...

These are actually rather heavy...solid steel I would think.
When I was growing up right after WWII, we bought these by the handful from Army/Navy stores for pennies. We were told that during the war, one plane could drop millions of these out of cardboard boxes without having to aim very well, and when they reached terminal velocity they would go through a car top and kill the occupant.

Watched "The Station Agent" staring these two people...
Recognize her as the warden's wife in The Green Mile?

Slowly (but speeded by the internet awareness) hemp is making a come back...

A statistician had some very interesting things to say. One of them was that, more or less, 30 minutes of running will add 30 minutes to your life. But you will have already used that 30 minutes running.

A new and very large study of facial expressions discovered that they are WAY more complicated than ever realized. The slightest change in one tiny part of the face can change the same expression into many.
They, of course, used computers to map the differences. Wish I had a photo of more subtle variations, but no.
An airline?!?

Listened to a talk about income disparity. It was stated that NEVER...IN ANY CULTURE has it been as lopsided as it is in America right this minute. Further, it was stated that there was a trip-wire at which the masses simply explode.
I don't hate rich people, but what we see now is just fuck obscene.

Onions, as well as potatoes can be grown from itself. You just cut part of it off, plant it, and start all over again, time and time again. I wanted to try it but was dissuaded by the fact that foods that can be grown that way are the cheapest in the grocery store, so why bother...

A wonderful clock that writes it out on an Etch-a-Sketch...

Saying "I'm offended" is telling the world that you can't control your own emotions and need others to do it for you.

With age, my wife is getting more beautiful, not less, and I accused her of having that Benjamin Buttons thing.
(you young motherfuckers might need to write this shit down)

If you ever are so desperate that you call in dead, make sure you have your obit put in the newspaper. Trust me.

Grown men dressing up in Dark Age garb is not normal, but on duping the masses it is....

Can you imagine punishing Free Thinkers as dangerous?

I find it interesting that I found all of those on the same day on different sites. Oh, well.

When I see really attractive people I just laugh because I know if we lived in the Aztec culture they'd be sacrificed to the gods for their beauty. But that might just be me.

A man works hard all week to keep his pants off all weekend.

LET'S DO DICKS.....AGAIN...

Saw this and it reminded me to the French twine thing I posted earlier...

This feminism thing is a real poser...
Having a go-getter wife and two daughters, I, of course, want everything to go well for them. I don't like "giving" anyone anything just because of an accident of birth, but leveling the playing field may not be a give away.
Here's a related example of what has pissed off so many people. Right here in my home town, they had a push many years ago to hire more black firemen. Things went well until over the years it was discovered that hardly any of the black firemen rose to positions of leadership. The culprit was that black firemen fared far, far worse on the written test required for advancement.
So if this problem was presented to you, how would you solve it?
The local fire department simply threw out the test requirement.
Yeah, we privileged white people get pissed about such things.

Woke up the other morning with the glitter from the lap-dancing stripper all over my legs...
Try to explain that to your wife.

If I'm not mistaken this is the training ship of the Coast Guard...

OOMVO....
Just another reason I'm going to hell.

This is the beginning of the world's deepest free dive. You might want to look that up on YouTube...
