The puzzle has two number sequences, (perhaps to confuse us). The even numbers are 1,4, 9, 16, 25, 36 ... they are the square numbers (the next would be 49).
The odd numbers are 3, 3 ,5 ,4, ?, 3... These are the number of letters in the first six numbers: so one has 3 letters, two has three letters, four has 4 letters, five has 4 letters - and this is our missing '?' number, six has 3 letters.
The missing number is therefore 4.

This took me a very long time. I have no way of knowing if I am right, but it fits tbe pattern I see.
that's a great solution! I figured out the squares, but not the other sequence...drove me crazy. I think your solution is definitely it!
