FOOD FOR THOUGHT

A very nice person left me this comment:

"When a finger is pointing at the sky only the fool stares at the finger".

BTW, this quote is also applicable to the people who never cared to understand The Bible, finding reasons not to do so in minor (comparing to the hidden senses) inconsistencies in it.

---

I feel that the threat of eternal torture if you don't choose to believe the proper holy book out of the hundreds in existence, is hardly a "minor inconsistency". We wouldn't tolerate such abuse in bosses, parents, or governments and we should not tolerate it in a "loving God". And I've found that every single nugget of good advice in the Bible was taught by every kindergarten teacher in America without the threat of untold suffering.

SCP-396 “And Suddenly, Chair”

Special Containment Procedures

A geolocator has been affixed to SCP-396 to track its movements. Local Foundation liaisons have been dispatched to locations where SCP-396 frequently manifests to facilitate prompt re-containment. An airborne amnestic compound has been infused into the cushions of SCP-396 and into its containment chamber as a precaution. When possible, SCP-396 is to be contained within Area-93. Foundation personnel are not to mention any location or event taking place outside of Area-93 when they are within SCP-396's containment area. Failure to comply with this can result in demotion to Level 0 and is to be treated as disclosure of classified information.

Meanwhile in Texas...

When we talk about banning weapons we all draw the line in different places. Nobody in their right mind would allow everyone who wants one to have a nuclear device. Also, when talking about abortion it usually comes down to drawing a line...picking a time after which it should not be allowed. So, let's set up some ground rules. We are not considering any health ramifications or rape or incest. We have a pregnant woman who does not want to give birth. Almost everyone but the zealots would agree that within the first few weeks it would be acceptable. Everyone would agree that it should not be allowed at 8 ½ months. So, we have to draw a line. I'm very interested to know where you, Gentle Reader, would feel comfortable drawing the line. My Senator Graham proposes 15 weeks. That's almost four months. What do you think about that?

^^A7^^

There were many theories as to how the cat did that. One suggestion was that near death the human didn't fuck with the cat but rather left it in peace while someone else suggested that it had to do with the heated blankets. Anyway, I wrote a novel about that very thing, but I looked at it from the reaction of the old people who were not selected by the cat. They "knew" they had 24 more hours and many celebrated like they were teenagers.

Yes you need to remove the gender to get the rest wheel off, it's only one fastener.

15 weeks is fine. Ours is 12 weeks BUT there are exceptions to extend that period to full term under certain conditions.

In South Africa, a woman of any age can get an abortion on request with no reasons given if she is less than 12 weeks pregnant. If she is between 13 and 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion if (a) her own physical or mental health is at stake, (b) the baby will have severe mental or physical abnormalities, (c) she is pregnant because of incest, (d) she is pregnant because of rape, or (e) she is of the personal opinion that her economic or social situation is sufficient reason for the termination of pregnancy. If she is more than 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion only if her or the fetus' life is in danger or there are likely to be serious birth defects.

I think we are arguing 2 different things. Pro life is not necessarily arguing to take reproductive rights away ( I hope) and Pro choice is not arguing they want to kill babies. Its really an Apples and Oranges argument. I bet a lot of people who are pro choice would not consider doing the procedure for themselves. I am pro choice but not as birth control. I believe it should be in the first trimester when the baby is not viable. Religious dickheads made it all about late term abortion, which I wonder how often , if at all, that happens. My mother's friend swears that a doctor kills the fetus as its being born, so it doesn't count as a "live birth". Its hard to respect anyone's argument with so much blatant misinformation in circulation.

Also, I wonder how the argument would be if it was called "Gun Responsibility" instead of "Gun Control"

For me the "line" is somewhere in the fourth or fifth month. I think the woman needs to be making that decision for herself period.

A7: Assuming no health related issues that may warrant an abortion later, I think 16 weeks is acceptable. The mother has had ample time to think about bringing a new life into the world.

Delaying until or beyond the point of viability does enter the realm of murder for me. I define viability as being able to exist without the need of any outside influence other than the mother herself. No machines. No breathing tubes. No IVs. No incubator. No feed tubes. etc.

I would think (hopefully) that all pregnancies related to rape would be discovered and decided well before 12 weeks and be allowed termination. Again, the mother needs to make the decision before the point of viability.

Short answer - 16 weeks absent extenuating circumstances related to health and viability.

Dear Ralph,
I’m glad that my comment about the Bible left something in you. Let me share something that made me look differently at the matter. I wanted to do it some time ago, but I installed Warcraft 3 and was busy for a while.

In 18-th century people believed that heat dynamics was caused by a weightless fluid called “calorique” that flows from warm bodies to cold ones.Despite the fact that these believes where wrong the theory allowed to correctly derive equations of heat dynamics and quantitatively explain such phenomenon as heating, melting, evaporation and many others. Only when scientists discovered molecules did this theory become obsolete. In middle school physics classes we study the results of this “incorrect” theory until we are told about molecules in 9-th grade.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caloric_theory

As a lecturer, I’m thinking if I was living back then and I wanted to help humanity with explaining the laws of heat, would I tell them about molecules (which they had no means to discover and wouldn’t believe me anyway) or would I use the more comprehensible fluid theory?

One 20-century physicist said that revolutionary physics theories should not necessarily be correct. Another AI researcher mentioned that all theories are incorrect, but some of them are useful.

It is fair to say that Newton’s laws of physics are incorrect, because Einstein's Special Relativity Theory is the correct one. But we still study Newton’s Laws in middle school.

When Feynman explains the spin – one of fundamental properties of quantum particles – he talks about particles as spinning balls. Once he is done with the explanation, he spends another passage to assure readers that such representation is nonsense, otherwise the parts of spinning balls would move faster than speed of light.
In Soviet tradition, Landau introduces the spin by saying: let’s consider the operator of spin for the Shrodinger equation (then he writes down a matrix). Some soviet students would laugh at Feynman and his fairy tales about the quantum world.
Also we could go to another extreme and completely ban Feynman’s chromodynamics theory (or nuclear physics) because Feynman worked on the creation of nuclear weapons and helped to kill thousands of people. This is analogy to the awful cases of pedophilia among catholic prests.

They tell us at school that you can’t divide by 0, which is a lie. Shall we explain calculus to 2-nd graders to tell them the truth? Will it help to understand the world better? Probably not, they will hate Math.

When I look at the Bible I see a layer of such ‘incorrect’ statements that were meant for people of the Early Iron age. Once you allow yourself to get through this layer, you see other layers with much more sophisticated and consistent theories that were meant for more advanced readers. But I will write about them some other time.

Cheers,
Borys

And another analogy for the Bible topic. Let's assume that you and me are at the theatre or at the opera, enjoying a wonderful performance. But then some guy stands up and starts yelling "c'mon guys, don't you see it's all not real, how can you watch it, the costumes are fake, the pistol is made of plastic, etc".

What would we think of this guy? We know that the pistol in made of plastic, right? But we don't care, because there is something more to it. And it is not something at the stage that we can point at that we like in opera, right? It is rather something that emerges in our minds, but we need to be present at the opera for it to emerge.

Cheers,
Borys

Ralph Henry said...

Dear Borys, But we don't develop an entire worldview from a "fake" opera. As I understand it, the whole reason Jesus came down to Earth was to take care of the original sin problem. But the original sin of a snake talking a rib woman into eating a magic fruit was a lie. I understand that many works of fiction have wonderful lessons that can be gleaned from their pages, but for most Christians, the Bible IS NOT a work of fiction and is used as an excuse for legitimizing one's own prejudices.

Dear Ralph, I agree with your comment and I understand your view. It appeals to me as there are 140 million "religious" militaristic barbarians with nuclear weapon living across the border, who believe that God gave them right to invade other countries and to call it a Holly war.
But I convinced that such people shouldn't prevent us from exploring interesting things in this world.
There are lots of people misinterpreting Quantum mechanics, but it shouldn't prevent us from exploring its wonders.
If you don't mind I will be pointing out some interesting facts about the Bible in the comments. And personally I do enjoy your memes and jokes on religious topics.

Cheers,
Borys
