I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

To identify the poisonous pill among the 8 pills using a balance scale only twice, follow these steps:

Divide the Pills: Split the 8 pills into three groups: two groups of 3 pills each (let's call them Group A and Group B) and one group with the remaining 2 pills (Group C).
First Weighing: Weigh Group A (3 pills) against Group B (3 pills).
- Case 1: If the scale balances, then the heavier pill must be in Group C (the 2 pills).
- Case 2: If the scale tips (one side is heavier), the heavier side contains the poisonous pill.

Second Weighing:
- If Case 1 (Group C has the heavier pill): Weigh the 2 pills in Group C against each other. The heavier one is the poisonous pill.
- If Case 2 (let’s assume Group A is heavier): Take the 3 pills from the heavier group (Group A) and weigh any 2 of them against each other.
If one is heavier, that is the poisonous pill.
If they balance, then the third pill (not on the scale) is the poisonous one.
Using this method, you can effectively determine the poisonous pill in just two weighings.
