As I understand it, superconductors repel permanent magnets because of the Meissner effect. The demonstrators where the superconductor floats in a fixed orientation around a track made of permanent magnets also exhibit flux pinning. Basically, these particular superconductors (type ii) are impure and/or extremely thin, so they let some of the magnet's flux lines through them in a few areas and these penetrating lines are held in place strongly.
Thus, the superconductor essentially forms its own "track" within the flux fields of the permanent magnets and resists changes to its orientation within those fields. Therefore you can "lock" a superconductor in some position in the fields and then push it around the "track".
These are quantum mechanical phenomena. There are a couple theories from the fifties that explain the phenomenology of some of the types of superconductors used in those demonstrators, but there are some newer "unconventional" superconductors that don't fit in. Also, it being QM, there's still active debate over the specifics and extrapolations of all the theories involved.

Jambe, but why does it have to be super cold?
Because a superconductor is another state of matter (like plasma, gas, liquid, solid, and superfluid) in which Cooper pairs of electrons occur. At very low temperatures some materials allow (or force) electrons to stick together inside them. In this bound state, the energy required for two electrons to move across a crystal lattice can be lower than the temperature changes that would otherwise occur on that lattice as a result of their movement, and thus the material has no electrical resistance. QM is often counter-intuitive, but this is experimentally and mathematically true. It is this total lack of electrical resistance which leads to the complete rejection of magnetic fields, the infinite retention of electrical charges, etc.
These newer "high-temp" superconductors aren't easily explained by BCS or any other theory. They still exhibit Cooper pairs but not because of the same phenomenon that occurs in low-temp superconductors (that being modulation via a specific vibration mode of interlinked particles, aka phonons). Some physicists think an electron-level spin effect may be at work, but nobody knows for sure.
