About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

DEATH BED CONFESSIONS...SORT OF
A man was shot in South Carolina. While laying in a hospital bed being treated, he identified the man who shot him from mugshots. He died three days later of a blood clot. It was declared a "dying words" declaration, which is admissible in our courts as fact. But the defense countered that the wounded man DID NOT think he was dying, so his proclamation was NOT a "dying declaration" because the man DID NOT think he was dying and the presiding judge agreed and through out the identification. The shooter walked free.
So, a man who actually thinks he is dying is declared incapable of lying, but a man who is just hurt real bad is not.
How very befuddling.

The Boeing 787 test flight route was awesome.
Reminds me of the guy who mailed a package to himself in every city along a certain latitude from coast to coast. It would, of course, be returned to him as undeliverable, then he would rewrap it and send it to the next town. Prior to his first art show, the gallery removed all the wrappings thinking it had been mailed to them. He had to do it all again.

Shot the unarmed man through the door. "No active warrants" is an odd yet intentionally malicious way of saying "innocent man."

HELP ME
Within reason, every human being on the planet wants to come to America. There is a proposal afoot to only allow people who speak English. I'm having difficulty understanding why there is opposition to this requirement.
Further, do you think immigrants should get social welfare right off the boat, as it were? I don't think I do. Oh, if a person comes here in good faith then falls deathly ill, they need and should get assistance. But short of that, fend for yourself or go home.
Then there is the suggested change of policy that advanced degrees go to the head of the line. I know people with advanced degrees who educated Indian, Chinese and Japanese students (and others, of course) to their doctorate, then they are send back home even though they want very much to stay here in the good old USA. That is counter intuitive. Are you going to try and persuade me that a peach picker gets a welcome mat, and a PhD Astro-Physicist is denied? On what grounds are those decisions made?
PS: I would very much like to hear your comments on this matter. If you have input, send it in comments and I won't even know who you are. All I ask is sincerity...and honesty.

HUMANS AT THEIR STRANGEST

I am a student of human behavior, just like everyone else I suppose. Here is a collection of the things people do that I find perplexing.

If you park like this...
Fuck you.

Julie D'Aubigny was a famous 17th century French opera singer who once took the holy vows to enter a convent just so she could have sex with a nun.
She also had a habit of seducing women at parties, which would lead their husbands to challenge her to a to a duel. She was an expert duelist and killed 10 men like this.

Originally, scientists thought that a humpback's long pectoral flippers were used strictly for steering, but new video footage from a camera attached to one shows evidence that humpbacks also use their pectoral flippers to propel themselves through the water by flapping them much like a bird would with its wings.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Watched the movie The Promise.

Why has the world given the Turks a pass on what they did to the Armenians when it is painfully obvious that they more or less invented the whole concept of mass extermination? Or not.

One author laid the blame at the old culprit Nationalism. The Ottoman Empire was collapsing and, of course, you had to blame somebody...so why not the Armenians. Desperate regimes resort to desperate measures...the Nazis in Germany, the fascists in Italy, and lest we forget, the white man's genocide of the Native Americans. When it comes down to a battle of us and them, it's always the most powerful side that strikes first.

Hi Ralph,

First off, I don't want to go to the USA. Australia is good enough to not want to leave, and we get enough of the Yankee culture via TV and the local drones who most consume and re-enact it. I know you southern folk are a different breed though, and if I did go it wouldn't be NY or LA I visited.

A English language proficiency requirement is prudent, but determining the level of testing would be a fine line. I'm sure many native citizens would fail the standard immigrants are likely to be held to (esp. under Trump). It could be argued that Spanish proficiency would suffice. What is the tipping point of the population speaking a language before it is considered useful or essential to be proficient?

Welfare for immigrants is a prickly issue, but I heard somewhere that you can't have open borders and welfare at the same time which seems fair enough. But the USA has a funny definition of welfare, where a full-time unskilled worker at has to rely on the gov't assistance to fill the fridge. The worker gets blamed for being unskilled, and the low paying company who is the end beneficiary of the welfare gets applauded for smart business.
Educational expenses are high enough to cause debt slavery for the remainder of your working life, and your health system is brutal both on insurance and cost of prescriptions.

I'd be far more concerned with the welfare granted to companies that have profited, and continue to profit from offshoring.

Recruiting the best and brightest available from the immigrant pool is smart, and how my father obtained Australian citizenship. He was white and spoke fluent English so it wasn't hard. I'd assume that most PHDs would have no problem with achieving proficiency at conversational English. But you need to have some discernment here, as there are countless PHDs which are unemployable either due to the esoteric nature of their discipline or the lack of productive or marketable applications their knowledge has.

In Australia, we are happy to accept international graduates who have been "sponsored" by an Australian company - i.e, they have a job lined up because someone thinks their knowledge is worth paying for.

Call me a cynic, but I think there are elements within both our countries which would prefer the smart brown people not get a job in USA/AUS because it disproves the "skin pigment is associated with merit or potential" believers. They also fear that if these smart foreigners get influential, they may lose control of the cultural direction of the population. A salient example is the how generous post-ww2 immigration policy has led to Israeli influence in US politics far beyond their population percentage.

Have a good one,
