Many years ago I was commissioned to paint a mural commemorating the signing of the peace treaty between the British based in Charleston and the Cherokee Nation based in Ashville. They met halfway in Saluda, SC. The British recorded every detail of signing including the fact that the Cherokee leadership was completely covered in a bright red pigment.
The Historical Society that hired me wanted me to paint them bright red. I protested. We compromised by having them bright red except for their faces.
