About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

This, to scale, is how far apart the Milky Way galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy are:

^^A1^^

This is how big Japan is compared to the east coast of the United States:

It's bigger than I thought.

^^A2^^

They both tried to make a go at acting after Forrest Gump but nothing to write home about.

Lab-grown diamonds, before they are cut and polished

^^A4^^

That just seems a little distasteful to me.

It seems like it would hurt tourism.

^^A5^^

On November 12, 1833, there was a meteor shower so intense that it was possible to see up to 100,000 meteors crossing the sky every hour. At the time, many thought it was the end of the world, so much so that it inspired this woodcut by Adolf Vollmy.

Hell, if it happened today I would think it was the end of the world.

Speaking of...

As I understand it, gold plating is about 10 gold atoms thick.

From the comments:

Should add a -Korea cause their shoe size system, literally just theirs, and only theirs, no one else's, is actually based on an actual system of measurement rather than random numbers assigned to arbitrary lengths. You go Korea. I'd differentiate which Korea, but one of them won't ever see this anyway.

How colors change as you go deeper underwater

Water selectively scatters and absorbs certain wavelengths of visible light. *OSIT

Some of my friends are discussing why Harrison Ford is still playing Indiana Jones but honestly, having an 80-year-old professor not retire is the most accurate part of the franchise.

One time I broke up with a girl so she took my silverware divider and that’s the kind of pettiness I look for in a mate.

Another example of important news being ignored by the news.

I think they probably meant "roof".

Don't miss the lower right add-on.

HUMAN ACTIVITIES

I almost missed the whole point of the exercise...

^^C1^^

Every person who works in a workshop needs to see that.

^^C2^^

If the internet is to be believed, that is quite common.

^^C3^^

Good God Y'all! Give that kid a scholarship!

^^C4^^

The bricks probably last longer than the asphalt.

^^C5^^

Do you think that is baked on later?

Girls in the Window by Ormond Gigli, 1960.

The story behind what many people call the most beautiful photograph ever taken:

"I had a brownstone [studio] that was right across from it on East 58th Street, and I look out the window one day and I see that they are tearing down the brownstones opposite me – they were old and no one was in them. And I’m looking at them and I’m saying: “It’s a shame, you know, what can I do with it?”I had a great staff there [at my studio], so I’m discussing it with my studio manager – if we could get the frames out of the windows, we could shoot a girl in each window. So I had my studio manager go to talk to the head demolition guy, and he said “Yes, but you have to put my wife in the shot!”We had to do it the next day, at 12 o clock when the workers had their lunch hour. We got models, we got friends. They wore their own outfits, nothing was styled – it was a happening."

I believe not only was the demolition guy’s wife in the shot, yours was too?

Yes! My wife is on the right-hand side. If you go up to the second floor she’s two over in a pink outfit.

This is what $1,600 in one-dollar bills looks like:

Yeah, I certainly know that. But if stacked with even a small weight on top it would crunch down to almost half the size.

^^C9^^

For decades, the only thing left for me to do was watch a grandchild grow up. Now every item is off my to-do list.

^^C10^^

We as a nation have decided to put the safety of our own children as a secondary concern.

And even if we rationalize that the chance that your child will have his head blown off by an angry person is small, think of the trauma of PRACTICING for such an attack.

^^C11^^

I would have lost the bet on how that ended.

Or...the left off the bloody part.

^^C12^^

At first, I thought it was a self-driving car driving itself home after an accident. But then I noticed the guy's hand.

What’s the difference between a camera and a sock?

A camera takes photos,
A sock takes 5 toes.

George Washington died in 1799. The first Dinosaur fossil was discovered in 1824. George Washington never even knew Jurassic Park existed.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST

I once folded a paper airplane out of a 3'x2' piece of heavy paper and then tossed it off the top of a 6-story parking garage. It stayed in the air for a long, long time.
My design was far superior to the one in the clip.
^^D1^^

I made one of those out of rolled-up dollar bills. The results were less than stellar.

^^D2^^

The problem is that they all shit regularly.

^^D3^^

I assume those are blue tarp roofs.

^^D4^^

My #1 Advisor's favorite city.

^^D5^^

I wonder if that offers any challenges during strenuous sex.

^^D6^^

I would love to know how they anchor the lighthouse to the rock.

I found a clearer photo later...

^^D7^^

^^D8^^

I've loved every single giant kit-like installation that I've ever seen. I think that one is a samurai.

^^D9^^

The rest of the world does things like that to encourage reading while we Americans close libraries for daring to admit that gay people exist.

^^D10^^

Overband magnet separator

I think the little slide on the side was an add-on to solve a previously unforeseen problem.

^^D11^^

Bear Cubs

Did you notice that the snow is rather bear-shaped?

It even has ears!

D4: the title of that image is "The Transition....".
To me that is more like a clear demarcation, rather than a transition of any kind.

puzzle A
looking at each row, 1 goes on top of 2, resulting in 3.
so black hex goes on top of smaller white square, obscuring it, resulting in view of black hex (A)

It's actually bigger than that, the islands north of Hokkaido are missing from that image.
