About Me

I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

*Verification Requested

*Remembering that the first casualty of war is truth.

^^A^^

I have only had a handful of people who have told me that they actually believe that their prayers are answered and each time I ask what God has against amputees. Not once has God replaced a missing limb. A nice thought experiment.

Most of those believers had never heard about spontaneous remission of cancer and are shocked to learn of it.

^^A2^^

Monitoring of simulated wound healing in biosynthetic materials over 64 hours found that wavy gaps in fact heal nearly five times faster than straight-edged ones, thanks to distinctions in the cells' movement pathways.

^^A3^^

I have always been a maker of things and the best piece of advice I can give is to not be afraid to work very, very hard. The slothful need not apply.

It is kind of lame that we don’t inherit knowledge from our ancestors and we have to study to learn what they learned thousands of years ago.

FUN WITH LANGUAGE

^^B1^^

There's a lot of that going around lately.

^^B2^^

Speaking of...

^^B3^^

Those look like postcards and remind me of that bar in Ocean, New York whose walls are covered in postcards. But they are turned to reveal the address which is just "Henry's Bar, Olean". And they came from all over the world. Come to find out, any mail service in the world would look at that and send it to America and once in America there is only one city named Olean, and in Ocean there is only one Henry's Bar.

^^B4^^

All things RH...

OBJECTS OF INTEREST

^^C1^^

And to think, they had to consider that with horse-drawn carts also.

Another person who likes to reuse.

^^C3^^

I first posted that years ago and would have thought they would catch on by now. Even if they only provided 10% of the power to the street lights that's still a 10% reduction in the electric bill.

^^C4^^

"A school in Florida banned Amanda Gorman's inauguration poem The Hill We Climb - I handwrote out the entire poem to make a portrait of Amanda Gorman. Here it is big enough to download and print. Enjoy."

^^C5^^

You gotta pay extra for that.

^^C6^^

I'm not sure why we were being asked to watch that.

^^C7^^

Here we go again. I would never have posted this except I kept running into it on site after site. I'm assuming the guy is using a 12V air pump hooked to his battery to pump air in his tire. Am I missing something?

^^C8^^

Talk about your cross-species "friendships".

^^C9^^

There are people who take great pride in their work...

And then there's this jackleg...

It's called self-care, Sweetie, Google it.

I always liked to use existing windows in my designs also, but did you notice one of them appears askew?

More anasaphilia...

I am reminded of this:

On September 14, 1927, dancer Isadora Duncan is strangled in Nice, France, when the enormous silk scarf she is wearing gets tangled in the rear hubcaps of her open car.

Just another reason to like big ass trucks.

Do you think the string broke?

^^D8^^

This man is betting his life that the ice holds. I'm a gambler and have to look at the other side of the ledger. If it breaks I die. If it doesn't break I have a momentary thrill.

^^D9^^

That took me much longer than it should have.

^^D10^^

I'm the guy who would have built it five times stronger than needed.

^^D11^^

The joy and passion captured in that photograph are extraordinary.

Bravo!

IF YOU ARE POLITICALLY OVERSENSITIVE YOU MAY WANT TO SKIP TO THE NEXT SECTION NOW

As a son of the South, I grew up just about as conservative as one can get. But I met and became very good friends with black men in the military and realized that my racism was just a social construct that I could keep or drop. So, I dropped it.

Additionally, I married a woman who is loved by all and that is true because she has great empathy for anyone who is struggling. She taught me that having mine and to hell with everyone else is no way to live a full life.

---

I often post items like this that are true Food for Thought...for me anyway.

Now that this has been proven to be a lie...

All I ask is for you to think very carefully about what other lies you are being fed by the same liars.

---

I try very hard to educate myself. I read everything I am sent and weigh it carefully.

I'm reminded of the guy who sent me his "proof" that masks were worthless against an airborne virus because he read (and sent me) an article about two schools in India - one required masks and one did not. And they had similar numbers of covid. Of course, there was no mention of what transpired AFTER school. Had they all been allowed to run around maskless after school one would expect similar infection levels.

But more importantly (to me anyway) is that I often leave such commenters with a question and very few of these questions are ever answered. I think that is because the commenter takes his potshots and then never returns to read my rebuttal. For that reason, I constructed these comments for all to read.

The question I asked the man who sent the mask article was:

"What does your doctor advise you to do?"

I truly wanted to know but he never responded.

---

I try not to base my opinions solely on whether it's conservative or liberal. I want to get the southern border under control. I do not want to forgive all college loans. I want to keep my guns. I think men who transition to women have an unfair advantage in sports.

And I find this very unfair.

I listened to every word of his trial and told my wife that had I been on that jury I would have found him not guilty also.

---

You are being asked to believe that men who want to be women and women who want to be men are somehow a danger to you and your children. I disagree.

I'm a gambler and the odds say your child is far more likely to be abused by someone in authority. But more importantly, you all know that. You are not stupid. You read the newspapers and you are aware that there are no (or very, very few) cases of trans people abusing children. Further, you know almost all abusers are priests, cops, scout leaders, and other authority figures. Yet trans people have become targets. Why?

Until a drag queen walks into a school and strangles eight kids with her boa, I think we are focusing on the wrong problem.

---

It's not Socialism to recognize that the game is rigged. Our government is for sale and you and I don't have enough chips to even get in the game.

A friend was complaining about the - to him - obscene salaries of professional athletes. I explained it this way:

A football franchise is a business. It makes a lot of money and for the sake of illustration, we are going to say that all of this money is placed in a big bucket. Out of this bucket the owner pays for uniforms, staff, travel, etc,...and players. And any money left over in the bucket the owner gets to put in his pocket. So, when the players take more money out of the bucket it just means that the owner pockets less. So, who would you rather see get the money - the actual stars of the sport or the already rich owners?

And please don't try to tell me the owner took the risk. When was the last time an owner lost all his money by owning a pro franchise?

---

Now let's apply that exact same illustration to all the wealth in America. It all goes in a really big bucket and parts go to this or that until it's empty. Now, for the very first time ever, half of the bucket goes to a dozen or so people.

I suggest we think about that very carefully.

---

Now for the point of this whole exercise.

My previous observations in this section were in response to my unanswered rebuttals in the comment section. I now turn my attention to individuals who took the time to respond to my request for clarification.

I wrote that many people seem to hate the whole idea of electric cars and I just didn't get it. I further asked for someone to explain it to me. And two did.

Commenter #1:

They are expensive.

They are talking to the mothership which has control over them.

You have to have it serviced by the dealer network, expensive.

Once out of warranty the mothership will stop giving you software updates etc. or sell you a $$$ replacement battery.

Their range is limited and you are tied to routes with charging stations.

In my country electricity is also fuck expensive.

There are other things I forgot.

---

Commenter #2:

Why don't you put your money where your mouth is and buy an electric car. I would love to see you & the missus touring those back country roads you love so much in one. It would make great content for your blog.

---

#1: I simply MUST hear more about this mothership.

Are you suggesting that gas cars are serviced for free?

If you are worried about finding charging stations then get a hybrid. But most of your driving is to and from work which is PERFECT for an electric car.

The study I read was that on average it costs $485 a year to charge a car and $1,117 for gas.

In the US, you can get a huge tax credit for buying an electric vehicle.

---

#2: I bought my first electric vehicle in 1991. I upgraded a few years later and when covid curtailed my driving I gave it to charity. Does that satisfy your money/mouth challenge, you snarly pip?

If I wanted another road trip I would rent a car for it.

Why would I want a long-distance touring vehicle sitting idle  95% of the time?

---

But both of the commenters have missed the point. EVERY emerging technology had hurdles to overcome. I can imagine an old argument to always take a horse and wagon because gas stations are few and far between. Or not wanting air travel because there weren't many airports. Or thinking electric lights would never catch on because they will have to run a wire to each and every house.

But moreover, we MUST cut emissions. Our planet is being ruined. The whole world sees very bad things on the horizon and whether you "believe" it or not, it is real and it is dangerous. Electric cars are not zero emission what with the manufacturing process and electricity generation, but it IS better than gas.

---

Thank you for your patience. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

RE: Electric cars. Here's a column from The Guardian by Rowan Atkinson (yes, the comedian) that addresses some of the issues you mention.

C13: it doesn't look askew to me at all. It looks open. Typical windows you find in Europe.

But did you notice the person standing on the roof?

D9: you can't see it here, but I can almost guarantee that he is top roped.
do a Google lens search on the image. Look at the images taken behind the climber. They are all top roped.
