About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

Yes, I'm "Church Key Using" old.

They replaced that can with this one.
You know how stupid the average person is - well, drunk people are much more stupid than that. Drunks dropped the little tab down into the can and many of them ended up in the emergency room due to swallowing it.
Those little tabs are now collector items. True.

Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it's rare to see a great blog

Insulin was first purified from either pig (porcine) or beef (bovine) pancreas. These were the primary sources until a few decades ago. It is true the B&B (along with the biochemist who purified it) made the procedure known for all to use. However, it's not exactly cheap to extract and purify insulin from the pancreas of animal sources.
Now human and "synthetic" insulins are produced in bacteria using recombinant DNA technology. These synthetic insulins are slightly modified versions of human insulin with unique properties (onset and duration of action, for example). https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/fromdnatobeer/exhibition-interactive/recombinant-DNA/recombinant-dna-technology-alternative.html

Just because the idea to purify insulin was made widely available at no cost, it doesn't make it cheap to isolate or produce.
