About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

RATHER UNIQUE HUMAN BEINGS

Life imitating art?

Stay strong, my friends.
^^3^^

I've seen several frozen fish like this, but I wanted to show you this one to demonstrate how hard normal people work to show you cool shit on the internet.

"Gabriel Nobre, 19, with his mom and sister right after he found out he’d passed Brazil’s famously difficult university entrance exam. The young man had cut a deal with a prep course to clean the building in exchange for free classes to help him prepare for the exam."

I had my doubts so I looked on Snopes.

Sometimes alcohol in your system can be a benefit! Plot twist.. she was drunk

Boardgames have been around a long, long time.

Here are a few interesting antiques.

FROM YOUR HOST'S PAST

To be honest, I don't know what all that means, but it reminded me of a phone call I received the other day. A close relative called and said, "I have some bad news for you." First of all I was furious about that lead in. If you have bad news for me just blurt it out...don't lead me on. Anyway, she went on to say she had her DNA tested and that's how she got the bad news. Then she asked if I wanted to know and I said that I did not. If further explained that if my genes showed I might get this or that disease I just as soon not know. She then said it had nothing to do with any health issues, so I told her, in that case, tell me. She said that her closest genetic match was a man born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1965. I told her that the man was, in fact, the illegitimate son that I sired in high school and put up for adoption. But to be honest, the DNA test was dead on.

When I was in the throes of Meniere's disease those stairs would have created a real problem for me.

Even shadows on a highway like this required me to divert my gaze.

It's not so much the pattern, but rather the pattern passing up under your feet and/or car.
^^13^^

Images like that bring back a million memories of the wife and I's backroads roadtrips. But beware: Don't try that unless you have a very comfortable marriage.
^^14^^

I watched a documentary on the Perrier marketing strategy. They discussed going with the health benefits, the mixability, purity, etc, then settled on putting it in a bottle everyone could recognize, tripling the cost and banking on the snob appeal to sell it.

A young friend of mine who became a teacher of young children.
My advice to him was that we are not only bigger than they are but smarter.

I saw this...

And it got me thinking about the 1956 VW ragtop that I bought in Germany for $300.

Most people don't know that there are fiberglass bodies you can buy and swap out on any VW frame.

You know how I love language. Well, this is short and I had to listen to it three or four times. Enjoy.

“YOU HAVEN’T GOTTEN OFF THAT COUCH ALL DAY!!!”

-my wife yelled, failing to even ACKNOWLEDGE my three trips to the bathroom this morning.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST

Come to find out any size fruit that size with similar moisture content will do that.

This took me a minute...

Speaking of...
I'm sorry, but I tried that once and hated it. In my opinion, those are tastes that should not be mixed.

Brilliant.

When I win the lottery I'm going to build a house full of those things.

With that narrow a wheelbase it seems it should topple easily.

Read all the specs on this...

 Nice try China!

Get it?
^^26^^

I, of course, would have given the kid an A.
^^27^^

I don't know where this is but I like it very much.

My wife got an organic, free-range, non-GMO, antibiotic-free turkey for Thanksgiving — and every one of those adjectives added 20 bucks.

WHAT IT IS IS EMPLOYMENT

I knew a young woman who did that very thing. I talked to her for hours. I wanted to know everything there was to know about it.
^^30^^

Earthquake? Were they signaled to fall? Were the apparatus moved deliberately? Anybody?
^^31^^

Men try to get good at shit like that all the time. When I was a bartender I could slide a frosted mug of beer 10' down the bar and not only have it stop of the correct patron but the handle was facing his direction. I was somewhat of a legend for it.

LOCATIONS OF NOTE

 ^^36^^

The routes are presented schematically rather than geographically, but still interesting. That's a long-ass haul up through Alice Springs.

I've been reading your blog for a few years now. I think about the work required just to assemble all this every day, and I am amazed that you never miss a day, and it's always entertaining and thought-provoking. But mostly, I find your "OOMVO's" to be pure creative genius. Well done!

Really enjoyed today's blog, especially the frozen woman, the Brazilian student and those awesome antique board games. Thanks!
