About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

ANTI-SCIENCE BIAS

America is developing an underclass of people who denounce proven science. Not only do they say they believe in sometimes comical poppycock, but they take pride in arguing sides of an issue that were settled years ago.

^^1^^

In some circles, it is a badge of honor to believe that the government is responsible for all the evil in the world.
And to more and more Americans science equals government. Hating government means hating science.
^^2^^

In almost any field of controversy, you can find a "scientist" who supports or says they support, any position.

Well, you can't throw a dead cat on TV without finding a doctor who recommends the product being advertised. That does not mean that his advice is trustworthy. Years ago they invented an aid to help you cut through the bull shit - peer-reviewed journals. More than anything else you can trust peer-reviewed journals.
^^3^^

^^4^^

^^5^^

Let's begin our discussion with the most dangerous group of people in the world:
ANTI-VAXXERS

I do not know why a person would believe people like this over their family doctor, but this latest fad of not vaccinating children is killing people and shows signs of growing.

During that film on flat-earthers, there was a connection between them and anti-vaxxers.
There are people who go all in when it comes to conspiracies.

But there seems to be some light at the end of this tunnel.

 And...
^^6^^

GMOs

We have been genetically modifying food for...oh...ever.
^^7^^

CLIMATE CHANGE DENIERS

I don't know that young lady and I don't know if what she said is factual, but I do know that I always look at the funding source of all the scientific studies and I see no evidence that my Ph.D. scientist daughter has been paid to lie to me.
^^8^^

 ALTERNATIVE "MEDICINE"

I have no way to know if those people could have been saved by traditional medicine, but it was the only image of the problem I could find. I also know that some alternative medical practitioners coordinate treatment with the clients' real doctors.
But I have never understood how a normal, thinking person can honestly think they are smarter at something that their doctor has spent years researching.
^^^^

PATIENT INSISTENCE

As I understand it, a doctor is more or less required to give a patient the medicine they ask for if it is on the list of drugs for that malady. Thus we see countless TV advertisements for medicine.
I think it best to let my doctor choose my drugs; not some Madison Avenue ad rep.
^^9^^

Humans pretend to be smart but we still look at the ceiling when we hear a noise upstairs like we're suddenly going to have x-ray vision.

RARELY SEEN OCCURRENCES

I wonder if the other horses learn this trick from that guy and if not, why not.

Avalanche on Interstate 70 in Colorado.
I kept screaming for the driver to back the fuck up!

PEOPLE NOT LIKE YOU AND ME

How to photobomb the crowd.
Ukraine: Mayor of Olevsk city in Zhytomyr region photobombed paid protesters who came to rally against him. And no one recognized him (red arrow) via @tarasmi. The poster says: "The mayor and his cronies are suppressing the rights of the  community." Posipaka = crony.

^^13^^

Cue the Benny Hill music...
Yes, I have shown you numerous clips just like that. But I wanted you to ask you what do you think is causing such a display of horrendous driving skills? He could be drunk, of course, but it also may be panic. He could be having a stroke. There could be a snake crawling up his pants leg.
^^14^^

The look on his face after being beat by a girl is worth another look.
^^15^^

I'm not much for kiddie fantasy when it comes to movies.
^^16^^

Doctor changed grandma's meds again.
^^17^^

What a wonderful pastime.
^^18^^

How the hell does she get back up?
^^19^^

We all know that soldiers risk their lives. What do you suppose that does to their spouses waiting back home?
^^20^^

Speaking of putting your duty ahead of your own well-being...
Commander Jeremiah Denton giving a forced interview from the Hanoi Hilton, in 1966, during which he pretends the lighting bothers his eyes. He is actually blinking Morse code for "Torture."
This was the first confirmation to US Naval Intelligence that Vietnam POWs were being tortured.

Denton was released in 1973 after almost 8 years of torturous conditions and eventually reached the rank of Admiral. He died in 2014.

In Israel "Ma po ze, Chicago?" (What is this, Chicago?) is a saying for when people are acting unruly.

OBJECTS OF INTEREST

Attractive and didactic.
^22^^

I have a real love for the culinary arts...and I really mean the art part.
^^23^^

Close, but not really. water getting pulled out of the bacteria is what kills it. There is enough water to survive, but the honey acts as a desiccation agent because of its hyperosmotic properties, thus killing it because the solutes are trying to extract water.
RH: Honeyologist here. Can confirm. No jar of honey has ever been lured into a life of crime.

Boy, do I have a hobby for you.
^^26^^

But the cleaning staff will probably use the same cloth to wipe down the whole device.

Don't fall for your job calling you "family" then treating you like a disposable can of fruit cocktail.

CYBERSPACE

I am not against technology. I am on my computer almost every waking hour.
That could have gone in my conspiracy theory section.
^^28^^

Computer games have gotten way more sophisticated.
The players, not so much.
^^29^^

Players haven't matured since the very first one.

 ^^30^^

My first computer was an Apple and I've stuck with them until this day.

Not because I think it such a superior product, but because I know how to dance around in it with great haste.
^^31^^

I appreciate that people take the time to give me new visual experiences like this.
^^32^^

3-d printed casts. 99% cooler and better. But a bit nippy in a snowstorm and leopard skin tan lines in the summer as their only drawbacks.

But what's up with the bitch's toes?
^^33^^

I love watching informative clips like this one more than once.

^^34^^

When we laughed and said, What's the worst that could happen? We obviously didn't know what the fuck we were talking about.

Speaking of aliens...

 ^^38^^

The real fun fact is Django says the D is silent and Nero responds "I know".
^^39^^

Then there's this guy...
