About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

IN AMERICA

Connecticut friends celebrating integration in 1958
Lately, it is becoming more and more difficult to deny that we are a country full of racists...still.

A hundred years ago only poor people owned horses. Today only rich people own horses.

You've got to hear this American lady complain about people being in her neighborhood.

MEMORABLE MISHAPS

We Americans love to try to do things themselves...

  ^^B1^^

I once was called to look at a wall on which the owner wanted a mural. When he told me how much he wanted to pay I told him that it wouldn't even buy the paint for a wall that large. He then said another artist said he could paint the wall "to look just like a real woman."
I said, "Please hire him! I will bring a lawn chair and a cooler of beer and watch him do it cause this ought to be good."

What do you think is happening here?

I assume it's a downhill run-off lane and both trucks had brake issues.

S.T.E.M. MATTERS

How did modern loathing of science happen?
I lay the blame squarely at the feet of religion and its rejection of basic science because it conflicts with their myth.

Blowing air bubbles under the ice layer...
I've often said that research is a serious game of 'what if'.
Artists play the same game.

A Star bursting in Space, taken over four years by the Hubble Telescope!
This is V838 Monocerotis. In January 2002 it suddenly went from being a dim, non-descript star to being highly luminous. What you're seeing is actually a Light Echo from a sudden burst in luminosity. As the light travels outward, it illuminates the various gas shells already surrounding the star.

Fun fact: the "shockwave" actually appears to travel faster than light.

I had a friend who used to tie rebar - without the tool. He did it by hand and as expected it was very hard work.

It's called fish farming.
They can farm just about anything including oysters.

This is oddly very satisfying...

That is an example of a cool way to use a computer.
This was called a Fish Tornado...

With no indication that it is computer generated.
^^C9^^

Mantis Shrimp

Those things are wicked. Their punch breaks the sound barrier, creating a shockwave that kills almost instantly. 15,000 newtons of ouch.

THEY'RE NOT FROM AROUND HERE

I'm assuming that is not in America because OSHA would never allow it.
I did find a heart of stone though.
It's upside down on the far right halfway up.

The full Tiananmen Square tank man picture is much more powerful than the cropped one.
I think we all need to look at that once or twice a year...so we don't forget.

An overgrown pool in an abandoned mansion.

To be honest, I don't know where that is, but it still depresses me. Such a waste of something so potentially beautiful.

rotate the picture counter-clockwise. Instead of leaning against a tree trunk the woman is lying on the trunk of a tree which has fallen and left the roots exposed. The lane is the sky. The key is the trees below the woman.

the tree has fallen over. that is the sky.

He is laying down on the side of a downed tree.

This type of root/soil mass is called a moot.
