About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

A PLETHORA OF OBJECTS

And objects only

My usual sites have been crammed with posts about the capital cult riots and finding quality items has been very difficult. It was so difficult that even I must resort to posting clips of cats...CATS!

And even I can admire this foot tracing skill...
^^A1^^

I present the remainder of my items in no particular order. I hope some of them will prove worthy of your time.

^^A2^^

You can't imagine how disappointed I am in my country's response to this pandemic.

New Species of Flower Trapped in Amber is 100 Million Years Old

^^A5^^

I once made a privacy fence by zip-tying sheets of lattice to a chain-link fence and it's still there 20 years later.

Along two other fences, I allow squirrel buried acorns to grow into a natural fence.

This is the largest canyon in the solar system at more than 4,000km long and 7km deep.

Unlike Earth's Grand Canyon, Valles Marineris probably wasn't carved out by billions of years of rushing water; the Red Planet is too hot and dry to have ever accommodated a river large enough to slash through the crust like that — however, there is evidence that flowing water may have deepened some of the canyon's existing channels hundreds of millions of years ago.

A majority of the canyon probably cracked open billions of years earlier, when a nearby super-group of volcanoes known as the Tharsis region was first thrusting out of the Martian soil. As magma bubbled up beneath these monster volcanoes (which include Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system), the planet's crust easily could have stretched, ripped, and finally collapsed into the troughs and valleys that make up Valles Marineris today.

Stonework

I watched a documentary on building stone walls like this one.
It was stated that the stones were not cut to fit. The trick was to have so many available stones that you find, say, one 12" stone and then find two 6" or three 4" stones to keep it level.
^^A15^^

That, Gentle Reader, is a rule to live by.
It's called be a caring human being.

Now think about that sign on that fence.
The "But we've always done it that way" excuse will doom us all.

Somehow he is going to blame his wife for that.

Reminded me of this...

I posted a gif of this and asked for help explaining it.

Behold the world's largest sea slug- the California Black Sea Hare. It can be found near the coast and gulf of California. And while I don't see it, the "sea hare" is named due to the two "ear-like" protrusions on its head. Brown algae make up most of this giant mollusks diet. And while it might seem defenseless, it's made itself highly unappealing to predators by concentrating the toxin acetoxycrenulide from the algae in its tissues.

^^A38^^

In 1970, for just $1,800, you could purchase a kit to build your own personal jet in just 600 hours using a snowmobile engine for propulsion.

The aircraft designed by Jim Bede was so small the pilots had to lie almost on their backs below fighter jet-like canopy, with a joystick-like device for control. Unfortunately, the plane ended up performing terribly in test flights, with engine stalls common. But despite this, thousands of kits were shipped- possibly because thousands of deposits had already been put down. With dissatisfied builders grumbling almost immediately, the company went bankrupt and left the buyers to cobble together working planes from what they had. And either due to the above and/or the original design, 12 to 15% of all the BD-5s that ever flew have ended in fatal crashes.

^^A39^^

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, thousands of tanks were converted into other things - true.
^^A40^^

I can understand his concern. No amateurs.
^^A41^^

^^A42^^

That is MUCH more difficult than it looks in that clip.

Group stranded in flood sends phone up on drone to transmit SOS message

In Far North Queensland, Australia, a group of friends, and one of their babies were driving to see a waterfall when they became stranded between two flooding creeks. They had attempted to drive across one of the creeks but the water killed their car engine and there was no cell reception to call for help. After spending the night in the rain, one of the individuals had the bright idea to attach his mobile phone to a drone and send it into the air in hopes that his SOS message would be transmitted. It worked! Emergency services dispatched an excavator and team with chainsaws to rescue them.

^^A45^^

There's a swimming in cold water joke in there someplace.

There are three boys and two girls in the family. Therefore Suzanne has one sister and three brothers, one of whom is James. James has two brothers and two sisters.

There are 3 boys and 2 girls (not counting the parents).
since James is clearly one of the boys, the other 2 boys are his 2 brothers, and he has 2 sisters...same number. Suzanne, being one of the girls, has 3 brothers and 1 sister.
