About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

GET LEARNT

It's easy to win an argument when you simply deny all evidence that you are wrong. I had a commenter who "proved" I was wrong about the need for masks during a pandemic because a city somewhere in Asia determined that there was no difference in the number of infected between schools that mandated masks and schools that did not. But, of course, there was no way of knowing if mask usage continued when the students were at home. Plus, there was no mention of what type of mask the children were required to wear. We know now that the type of mask is paramount.

As I have stated numerous times, a man surviving an awful automobile wreck despite not wearing a seat belt DOES NOT  PROVE THAT SEATBELTS ARE USELESS!

But my fallback position is ALWAYS to take my doctor's advice.

^^A1^^

I have never heard a logical explanation as to why there are so many people opposed to wind, solar, and tidal energy.

^^A2^^

I watched a recreation of that very thing. The guy with the goat skin bag was more or less on top of the water where it worked just fine. But as we have discussed before, at deeper depths the water pressure would prove problematic.

My questions are: Would the fact that the pressure on the bag is equal to the pressure on his lungs make any difference? And would squeezing the bag when you inhale work to overcome the pressure problem?

^^A3^^

Would I be correct to assume that the plant waits for a trigger - like rainfall - to bloom?

^^A4^^

^^A5^^

"Real". You can do that with pretty much any country.
History is like that.

My wife just sighed from the other room, which can only mean one of 1,850 things.

*I almost missed that.

Does anyone else have Bad Underwear which is kept at the bottom of the drawer to help them remember that it is time to clean the Good Underwear?

*Not me. I stopped wearing underwear a long, long time ago.

PEOPLE

I wonder what it looks like from the left angel.

^^B2^^

I am a very polite driver. I ALWAYS let cars into the lane and being and looking old most cars allow me to do the same.

The family that preys together...

^^B6^^

Dude, you're in a Pet Smart with a pair of Corgis, calm the fuck down.

^^B7^^

I looked at that photo and it reminded me of my dear friend, Jack.

When Jack came to me on a work/study from the university he didn't drink, smoke, curse, gamble, or do marijuana. He had just gotten back from an enlightenment tour of India. Jack was a religion major.

Within the first six months of working for me, he drank, smoked, cursed, gambled, and got high.

But back to the story...there is a bar in town called Group Therapy - probably the coolest name for a bar ever. One night Jack was in there looking just like any of these men.

The bar was notoriously dark and at one point someone took a flash photograph and captured Jack getting a blowjob from a young woman who was squatting on the footrest under the lip of the bar at the time.

Jack used to pick up strippers right off the stage to go home with him. Jack is a very interesting man.
^^B8^^

Actually, my wife and I are proof that you can do both.

^^B9^^

Yes, but is it Art?

I think art needs to be unique, one of a kind. It seems to me like those people make more or less the same tree over and over.

And I've been meaning to ask you this for a long time, Gentle Reader: How many unique, one-of-a-kind items do you have in your home? Discount family heirlooms since those weren't really your choice.

PLACES

If hair is sacred then my wife's legs should be worshipped.

True.
^^C2^^

I used to love going into the AAA office and having them map out a scenic route for me.

^^C3^^

I'm not sure I understand that. Anyone?

^^C4^^

There was an announcement at the Art Department that all lockers had to be cleaned out by a certain date. I asked what would happen to the stuff left in the lockers and the head of the department told me they cut off the locks and throw the contents away. I volunteered to cut the locks off and clean out the lockers. I salvaged tons of art supplies.

I think there are bathers in and near the pond.

How the hell did they get down there?

One of the biggest disappointments in my life was becoming ill and having to curtail my beach vacation with my grandson.

Why do they call it “book club” and not “no one had time to read it but we’re still gonna get together and drink club”?

THINGS

Did you notice the knee pads to keep him secure?

I've always thought there would be more tracked vehicles by now.

^^D1^^

^^D2^^

I've always had trouble drawing ovals like that.

^^D3^^

I think I would have placed the sausages somewhere else.

^^D4^^

The book my mother gave me when my first child was born.

I asked if she thought I needed it and she said it really helped her when I was born.

^^D5^^

Extremely rare! “Glass Octopus” off the Phoenix Islands

I can't wait to see images of the creatures in the oceans of one of the moons in the solar system. We will probably say they are the strangest things we have ever seen but we have strange right here on Earth that we've never seen.

^^D6^^

^^D7^^

This took me a moment.

^^D8^^

We've all had people like that in group projects, haven't we?

^^D9^^

I have been advocating that for decades. Using ultra-clean potable water to flush our shit down a pipe is insane.

^^D10^^

If wind can do that then it should be able to make electricity with no problem. Yet half of Americans are against it. I just don't get it.

^^D11^^

The look on her face...

It was stated that the other two items are a small tin of Vaseline and XXL condoms.

^^D12^^

Dog Robot Meets Real Dogs

Hell, I watched it four times just to take in the detail of the building.

I don't really have any heirlooms but I'm curious as to what you think about comic books as art. I've collected for 30 years and enjoy them immensely. Some covers, especially the war comics of the 60's are wonderful.

C2 the image you show is not The Strid. Look it up on Wikipedia - there is an image there. It looks as if you could easily step across it. However the rocks are mossy and slippery. The river Wharfe at this point is roughly 60 metres deep and very fast flowing. The water is full of bubbles too, so if you did fall in you’d go straight to the bottom as it’s impossible to float in a mixture of air and water. In spite of what many people say on the internet, The Strid has been dived several times, once (40 ish years ago) by the police, sadly looking for 2 bodies which were recovered further downstream.
Stay safe and don’t take unnecessary risks.

Puzzle Time...... A mounting stone from ancient Istanbul (Constantinople) which was used to get on a horse or more likely to get into carriages.

Dear David, I think collecting anything is healthy. I'm a collector of various things and that little thrill of adding one to my set can't be overrated. As to the art, I recently posted a section on what I called Fantasy Art (perhaps erroneously) and explained my admiration.
I would really like to post images of your collection. If you could email me a pic and then I could explain to my followers how I feel about them and collecting.

Renewable energy is a good thing but at night when the wind isn't blowing and I flick that light switch I want the lights to come on.

I offer this as proof that renewables are not as reliable as fossil fuels. With Putin and the Ukrainian conflict (no one has declared war) the supple of fossil fuels (primarily natural gas) is being threatened and limited.

The governments of the European counties are not storing as much wind or sunshine as they can but they are almost at storage capacity for natural gas.

I'm pretty sure the fog photo is just out of aesthetics for the photographer, it is a nice picture. Anyway, kind of reminds me of the movie 'The Mist'
