The "tops" were all glued together as were the "bottoms".
But then disaster. I discovered that the top would not sit down on the bottom if there were quarters in the slots. The problem was that some of the quarters always leaned and the protruding part of the top snagged on them. I almost threw the whole thing away until I realized I could trim the protruding bits on the top at a 45-degree angle and that angle would nudge the quarters into alignment.

Trucks all over the world beep when they back up. My truck sounds an alarm if I leave the lights on or my seatbelt is not connected. So, why can't those trucks have an alarm when it is in gear and the bed is raised?

It's a fire escape mechanism. The rotating doors slam together (usually without breaking glass but this guy was in the way) to make one non-rotating frame which allows free traffic through both sides. In some places this design is mandatory after a rotating door got stuck during a fire and people couldn't get out. this mechanism was triggered when the unobservant person on the other side tried entering the revolving door going the wrong direction
