 One Of My Very Own

I INVENTED A GAME

Did you know that you can buy Scrabble tiles in bulk? A couple of years ago I bought a thousand and here's what a thousand Scrabble tiles look like.

For my game prep, I first scraped the numbers off each tile with an X-acto knife.

After adding a clear coat to protect the ink I set up a gig on my drill press to make a pilot hole for screw eyes.

One reoccurring problem was debris gathering in the corner of the gig causing a misalignment of the tile. So I drilled a large hole to give the debris an exit.

I quickly learned that most of my time was spent reaching for a tile and then tossing the drilled tile in the box. So I moved everything as close to the drill as I could get them.

To attach the screw eye I found the appropriately sized socket and attached it to my drill. Once the eye was aligned with the hole I just pulled the trigger. Genius.

Now all the tiles are ready to feed onto a metal spit to spell out words.

I made a crude folding rack to hold each player's spit and named my game SPIT & SPELL.

Originally the game was to be played by each player blindly selecting 12 letters. After playing with just myself I realized that should be raised to twenty letters. Then there is the rule of triplets. If you have three of the same letters you may turn in one or two of them for replacements. This rule applies throughout the game. Then after a certain time, each player must pass five of their letters to the player on their right. The object is to make the longest word you can. Then the tiles are fed onto the metal rods provided and placed on the rack for comparison. Scoring is rather obvious.
