SEIZING AN OPPORTUNITY

This is part of the stadium where my Gamecocks play.

Off to the left, do you see those red things?

They are called a Cock-a-boos.

When the railroad companies switched to electronic devices on the rear of the last car to switch track, etc, there were thousands upon thousands of cabooses there were to be turned into scrap metal. You could buy one for just a few dollar more than scrap rates and some men in my city did just that, then they ringed the stadium with them and rented them out for tailgate parties and made a fortune.

When the caboose supply dried up, they bought other obsolete cars and now everywhere you look within two miles of the stadium you can spot one.

I think what made that possible was the fact that the stadium is in an industrial area with a shitload of preexisting rail lines.

I hate fake. These are plastic fake bricks used as a crosswalk on the campus of USC.

I keep an eye on some of my older installations.

Some are left unmolested due to the fact that there is little to no pedestrian traffic.

Other’s because they are in the middle of nowhere.

But there is this one…the longevity champion, despite being in a heavily pedestrian area on a busy street.

I credit its survival on several factors. First, it is the second installation in the exact same spot. But it is in an area of rather fluent apartments. I think (or like to think) that the first packet was taken out of curiosity and found to be interesting enough to share around the pool with his fellow apartment dwellers. Their curiosity sated and they simply didn’t need the money. Works for me.

My local DMV used to be a nightmare. You wait in a line for an hour only to be told you are in the wrong line. Then you wait in the correct line only to be told you lack one piece of paperwork. This happened over and over.

Then they did something very smart. They set up a little counter at the entrance where you told the lady what you wanted to do. She quickly checks your paperwork and you are sent to the correct location. Now most people are in and out within 20 minutes.
