I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

PERSONAL UPDATE

Studio work is tedious. Things that used to be so easy are now so hard. But I am coping.
I have a question for you that I want you to give much thought. If one person in your state had to die so that tens of thousands of people didn't have to lose their homes and/or their businesses - would it be worth it? And add into the mix that thousands of students could continue toward their degrees with just one life sacrificed? Go ahead give me an answer.
Now, what if that number rose from one to two or ten or a hundred or a thousand to positively affect those tens of thousands of fellow citizens? What number would you feel comfortable with?
That is the question that is facing dozens of governors across the country. It's all about how many lives are they willing to sacrifice to save many more people's livelihoods. But don't take the word livelihood too cavalierly, it means just what it says - a way to stay alive.
And I don't even get to vote on the issue because I am a spectator. I'm sitting this one out and just waiting for the final report. My getting an advanced degree and having two jobs my entire life the effort is finally paying off.
Please, please stay safe, Gentle Reader, and only venture outside if you have to...not because you are bored

Your final question is an interesting one and worthy of debate outside the hysteria of the 24 hour news cycle (where the news generates income for the broadcasters, and is aimed accordingly). Personally, I feel most of America (regardless of political or medical view) is misinformed.
Example: I live in Maine, a small state. The published daily CV19 data says 1200 confirmed, 720 recovered, 57 deaths. And all three numbers go up every day, creating a “no end to this” conclusion. Here’s a different view of Maine data:

1) there are 1,300,000 people in Maine. There have been 1200 confirmed ill. This is 0.09%.
2) of the 1200, about 750 reside in only 2 of the 16 counties.
3) of the 57 dead, more than half reside in nursing homes, and the affected people had multiple significant health issues.
4) the published data is since the beginning, and has no bearing on the current status:
A) in the entire state, there are currently on 30 people ill enough to be in a hospital. The other 450 people (94%) are recovering at home with normal care.

Contrast this with the current state of economics in Maine
1) unemployment is now record high
2) while the big-box stores (Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s) are open, the small business stores are all closed. Yes, the average small store that has 6 customers in the building at any one time is closed, and the owner is paying the price.

My fear is that we are headed toward a time when perhaps 25-30% or more of our country is desparate, when that occurs, lock your doors. desparate people do desparate things.

re telling a lie. You give too much credit. I think her first lie was that she would not lie.
