About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

THOUGHTS FROM YOUR HOST

I hate not knowing things. I spend a lot of time looking things up. Like this:

^^A1^^

I learned about people by working in and owning bars.

Some bar patrons wanted to be left alone and some wanted to talk your ear off. But by far the most important thing was the honing of my crap detector. I could spot a bullshitter as soon as they walked in the door.

^^A2^^

One extremely distressing thing I learned during this pandemic is the fact that Americans, in general, have absolutely no functioning crap detector.

In 1998 a scientist named Andrew Wakefield conduct an experiment to link autism and vaccine. When he published the results, he apparently succeeded to prove it. But, the science community proved that he had faked the results, and conduct it on only 12 patients which made it irrelevant.

The problem is that there are still people that have doubts and, because of their ignorance, believe that vaccines can result in autism.

Let's just keep it simple:

^^A3^^

Another discovery yielded by this pandemic is how many people are willing to bet their lives and the lives of their families and neighbors to make a political point.

^^A4^^

Another dismaying discovery of late was just how many racists remain in America.

^^A5^^

That's exactly how I supervised my mural crew - a cigarette in one hand and a beer can in the other.

^^A6^^

I'm the guy who told every member of the crew that if they fell off the scaffold they would be fired before they hit the ground.

^^A7^^

I have had two simultaneous jobs for as long as I can remember. Even while maintaining nuclear weapons I had smuggling and black market side gigs. When teaching I painted murals almost every weekend and was on the road during every holiday - of which there were many.

^^A8^^

One of my daughters did not take kindly to be awakened in the mornings. Nobody really gave a shit until it was time to start school. So I took a glass of ice water into her room and splashed some of the water from my fingertips onto her face. After that, all I had to do was take a glass with a few ice cubes in it and shake it near her bed.

^^A9^^

When I was writing my novels I would get on a roll and write all night then wash my face and go teach children all day. I did that more times than I can count.

^^A10^^

I think that's bullshit. The hardest part of making art is throwing away the efforts that don't meet your standards. When I made Expressionist canvases I destroyed about 90%.

^^A11^^

I only got really, really good at one video game and this was it.

Toy Box News

Did you know you can buy Scrabble tiles in bulk - for cheap?

Neither did I - but you can. So I bought a shitload of them with a plan to use them to adorn my newest toy boxes with the names of their intended recipients with plenty left over for future fortunate children.

First, I made a jig to hold the tiles in exactly the correct position in which to drill the perfect hole...not too far away from the edge as to interfere with the letter and not too close to the edge so that it breaks away.

I insisted that the parents of such fortunate children submit the exact spelling of their names so that I could not be blamed for any unfortunate misspellings.

I acquired some very delicate brass screws to secure the letters to the boxes and had great expectations for the outcome.

But, alas, I was not altogether pleased with the outcome...something about legibility I guess. Or them being a little too crowded for my taste.

(And did you know that Scrabble tiles were not all identically sized? Neither did I.)

But then I remembered that the whole point of the endeavor was as an introduction to the reuse of limited resources and the reuse of Scrabble tiles fit in nicely with that theme.

Anyway, I now have a shitload of Scrabble tiles for sale...cheap.

WORDS FORMING SENTENCES

^^B1^^

^^B2^^

I like that I know what that means.

^^B3^^

I think that him letting her have the whole door was a bit of sloppy writing. I mean, they both surely could have gotten their torsos out of the water. Or they could have taken turns. Or they could have paddled the door around taking life preservers off of dead bodies to make the door more buoyant. You get my point as did the whole audience in every theater in which it was shown.

^^B4^^

^^B6^^

Anybody?

WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT

I think that stupid bastard BACKED into the other ship!

^^C1^^

I don't care how many times I've seen that, I can't look away.

^^C2^^

That's amazing. Do you suppose that's a bog or some such?

Do you think that clip was sped up?

I think it was sped up.

Miles of dead fish washed up on the beach in Florida

The Red Tide that has been plaguing the Tampa Bay area in Florida is now causing fish kills in the ocean. The red tide has been causing very large fish kills in Tampa Bay for almost 3 weeks. Over 800 tons of dead marine life have been cleaned up so far, including Manatees, Dolphins, Sea Turtles, and large and small fish. The cities of Tampa and St Petersburg, Florida are having a hard time keeping up with the onslaught of dead marine life.

This footage was taken just north of St Petersburg, Florida. For the last 4 days, dead fish have been washing up on the beach. Every morning crews of people with rakes, trucks, backhoes, and tractors clean up as much of the dead marine life as possible. The dead fish continue to wash up on shore throughout the day and all night, then the process of clean up starts all over again the next morning. The red tide is caused by the dinoflagellate (a type of algae) K. Brevis. It occurs naturally in the water and feeds on nutrients in the water. Wastewater, fertilizers, and other pollutants can cause red tide blooms to be more severe and last longer than what might be natural.

Black gold, turf from the bog in Ireland

And it burns like logs.

Do any of you fine folk know if the smoke has an odor?

^^C7^^

You should get that "stain" checked out.

Interesting incorporation of a birthmark in a tattoo.

Funny guy.

Find the art department guy...

Ricardo Carapaz was so good at cycling, he won the Gold Medal at the 145-mile race with literally no one in sight behind him!  In winning the Gold Medal for his country, he has ended Ecuador's 25 year Gold Medal drought.

I once saw Vincent Price cook fish in a dishwasher on the Tonight Show. He wrapped it in aluminum foil with butter and herbs and set the machine to hot - of course.

^^C15^^

I like the green spaces. And I bet that one community has enough children to have its own schools without much traveling.

^^C16^^

I like the idea but why are the chains crossed? I would think that would make it more unstable. Any engineers out there?

^^C17^^

I'm thinking he faked it. What say you?

This is one of my favorite pieces. It's a 4'x8' table titled Steak For Eight and is a mosaic. It has some very heavy-duty carved legs and has "heirloom" written all over it.

On more than one occasion a diner has reached for one of those knives or forks.

Peat fires smell fantastic. Better than even the best wood fire.

Dear Oldtarf, not that I doubt what you say in any way but has any person who lives off the British Isles told you it smells good?

As a follower of your blog for years, I'm curious what you think about the CDC camps being considered.

A4: I don’t recall you pointing out the virus danger of all the (mostly peaceful) close quarter BLM riots and destruction last year. Not a pep from you regarding the thousands a day of unvaccinated illegals coming across the boarder to share recipes and viruses. BTW, blacks on a percent basis are by far the most unvaccinated. Crickets on that subject, eh. I’ll guess you believe that is because of their inability to obtain ID or maybe systemic racism, white privilege, etc. You should really stick with the pics of the hot ladies. They are far more convincing than calling people stupid. Cheers

A4: BTW Doesn't that "my body my choice" apply anymore?

I prefer to burn Kevins. They smell much sweeter than Petes. As opposed to Chads which are quite tart.

Dear Becki, If they were voluntary, having a safe place for old folks to hunker down might be a good idea.

Ralph Henry said...

Dear A4 Anon, I will repeat - I condemn ANYONE who ignores proven effective mitigation strategies in the middle of a pandemic. I condemn mob violence by ANY GROUP. I want secure borders. But...BUT if you refuse to get vaccinated to protect yourself, your family, your neighbors, and your country then calling you stupid is the BEST least offensive term I can come up with.
