About Me

My photo
I'm an artist, educator, militant anti-theist , and I write. I gamble on just about anything. And I like beer...but I love my wife. This blog contains observations from a funny old man who gets pissed off every once in a while.

China’s five hundred meters (1,640 ft) aperture spherical radio telescope (Fast) undergoes maintenance in southwest China’s Guizhou province. Fast, the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, is said to have identified more than 740 pulsars since its launch. Dubbed the ‘China Sky Eye’, the telescope is located in a naturally deep and round karst depression. It has a reception area equal to 30 standard football fields.

I was making a trip to a neighboring town and passed a pretty good sized motor home parked along site the interstate. I could see the engine compartment on fire.
On my return trip later that day what was left was being loaded on a flatbed truck.
Nothing left but the frame.
Maybe 4 hours total time between trips.

In my teens, a friend of mine had a car (quite a rarity where I lived and at that time). One day we were going somewhere and flames started coming from under the hood. We were right next to a public phone so he rang his dad (who had an insurance business) and not the fire department. His dad told to give it a few more minutes and then call the fire department. Presumably to make sure it was a wreck for the insurance!

C5 : "It has a reception area equal to 30 standard football fields."

I have no idea how large that is. Even if I were a sports person, I would have to ask is it American football fields? European football fields? Australian rules Football fields? I didn't even know there were non-standard football fields.

Can you just give it to me in square meters?

Or perhaps in school bus measurements like the news did for the Chinese balloon floating across the US? Then again, I'd have to ask if it's a short bus or a regular length school bus, so meters it is.
