Puzzle. Time: my immediate answer was " pencil". But it never really gets soft as it gets older.
I'm going to go with "pickle". Pickle starts out hard and long as a cucumber. As it ages it gets shorter. Although it's still crisp when purchase noon, it does get soft with age.
Puzzle: That would be a candle.
