But my tree was life-sized and the faces were more or less also life-sized - formed by twigs and bark patterns.

Yeah, I've never really viewed realistic Landscapes and Portraits and Still Lifes as "Art." If anything, I think work like this is practice. You're getting better at reproducing Life but it doesn't become "Art" until you create something that doesn't exist.
I mean, I could get behind looking at a Portrait and ooooing and aahhing over their attention to detail. Like if someone painted a reflection in someone's eye. That's cool... but is it art?
